My grandmother’s shop was filled with old furniture, mysterious objects, puppets of unknown origin, and human figures by my mother, who is a sculptor. I believe that every object carries its own memories, much like I do. It's exciting to repurpose an item and create new memories with it. It's as if I'm adopting them.
I grew up with my grandmother, who ran an antique shop in Busan, South Korea. Her store was Behind the Curtain to me. Different types of furniture and props gathering in a space, creating its own world. It was my playground, where I'd often engage in theatrical plays or play hide and seek.
When I feel anxiety, I begin to dream up surreal, theatrical situations and spaces that make me feel comfortable, safe, and secure, like I did as a child.
I dream up spaces crowded with old furniture, mysterious objects of unknown origin, and fragments of figurative sculptures.
